It’s measured by the work you’ve done. From school onwards, we’re fitted into a mould and given boundaries by which we’re assessed, depending on our grade and age. And the better we fit within those boundaries, the better we are as pupils. All of this carries over into the workplace, where the better we perform our tasks, the more valuable we are to the company. But what remains of you? Your school grades and work performance figures say nothing about you as a person.

In real life, there’s no such thing as an age when you’re old enough to go on this ride.

You don’t need to be a virtuoso guitarist to join a local rock band. You don’t need to read a million books to master a language to the point where you can structure your thoughts and express yourself at a decent level, so you can become a writer. You don’t need to know a programming language perfectly to create your own video game.

All those limits you set for yourself exist only in your own mind and serve merely as an excuses for laziness or fear of criticism. This is the surest path to misery and self-pity.

If you feel the urge to create something, go for it! Show the world what you’ve achieved, and no matter how bad your creation may be, you’ll build a following if you’ve put your heart and soul into it. Don’t hold yourself back. It’s only by doing what you love that you’ll find your purpose. You shouldn’t be defined by your performance at a workplace or at school. Put those aspects of your life behind you, as they truly don’t matter.

Leave behind something that will make the world a better place.
